Tire Chains FAQ: How fast can I drive with chains?

30 MPH

At speeds faster than 30, centrifugal force lifts the tire chains off the tire and causes the snow chains to slap the pavement accelerating wear.

For example:

If the chains are as tight as possible:
At 30 mph you get maximum tire chains life.
At 40 mph… 57% of the tire chains life
At 50 mph… 31% of the tire chains life.

If the tire chains are loose:
At 30 mph you get 50% of tire chains life.
At 40 mph… 16% of the snow chains life
At 50 mph… 7% of the tire chains life.
